Where Do Stink Bugs Come From?
The short answer to the question “Where do stink bugs come from” is, simply, Asia.
Stink Bugs, like much of your clothes and appliances, are Native to Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea.
The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, like many brave explorers of the past, traversed around the globe to seek asylum in the United States. It is theorized that the stink bugs made their way across the oceans in shipping containers or packages.
The first known reports of stink bugs in America are from Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1998.
Since then, stink bugs have managed to infest half of the United States. They first traveled south to warmer climates, but are now found up and down the east coast of America. Stink bugs have even been sited as far west as California. Like the explorers of old, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug also successfully achieved a Northwest Expansion.
Stink bugs are an invasive species with no natural predators. This is one reason why their expansion has been unimpeded.
The real question we should be asking is not “How did stink bugs get here?” Instead, we need to ask “How do we get rid of stink bugs?!”
